Job Description:
Job Purpose:
To lead a growing business relating to Special Projects Business Group within the Land & Air Sector of the Defence Division.
This will involve supporting customer-facing activities, managing allocated staff, supporting bids/proposals, delivering profitable and timely projects, developing products and generally contributing to Sector management.
The role reports to the Business Executive, Land & Air Sector, who will set targets for the Business Manager.
Person Profile
1. Career Background:
- At least 10 years experience in the Defence Domain.
- Good understanding of one of the relevant disciplines.
- A broad understanding of how the Defence community delivers and exploits Special Project services.
- Experience in managing a team.
- Experience across the whole the life cycle of a project form bidding through to delivery and final review.
- A good knowledge and understanding of MoD procurement and support processes.
2. Specific Skills
· Experience of the full system lifecycle (requirements definition, design, development, test & acceptance).
· Capable of demonstrating understanding of design issues relating to complex systems, or system of systems.
- Prove track record in people management.
- Proven track record in project management.
- Liaise with customer and subcontractors on technical issues relating to systems engineering and system design.
- Manage allocated budget and resources to meet agreed milestones and deliverables.
· Ability to communicate with DE&S, DEC and related organisations at all levels.
· Capable of managing medium sized systems engineering activities.
· Capable of demonstrating understanding of design issues relating to Complex Systems, or System of Systems.
· Architecture modelling and requirements analysis.
· Competent user of MS Office packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
· Experience of working to ISO 9001:2000 standards.
· Experience to bidding for new work.
· Experience of the full project lifecycle (requirements, design, develop, test, deliver).
3. Academic background
- First degree level (or equivalent) in a maths, physics, electrical/electronic or software engineering related discipline.
- Professional qualification / membership.
4. personality and style
- Good Communicator (presentation skills, reporting, customer relations).
- Approachable and able to listen to others.
- Able to quickly gain respect for sound technical judgement from both external and internal customers.
- Team Worker but able to work alone if required.
- Flexible (prepared to support several projects at the same time and to refocus effort at short notice).

- Willing and able to visit customers / suppliers and undertake occasional work at other locations in the UK and abroad.
- Be able to set and maintain high personal standards and encourage staff to do likewise by setting a good example at all times.

- Be prepared to work in either South of Bath or North Bristol areas, relocating from present area if necessary. The job will be based South of Bath. (E)
